Even though there are twelve more months before launching this new church, exciting things were already happening. The very first pre-launch meeting was held on April 28, 2019, in a home that hosted 15 people. These initial attendees consisted of several families who were fervent and eager to follow Christ’s command to make disciples of all nations. In obedience to Christ’s mandate, they voted to call themselves Mosaic Church.
On just the third pre-launch Sunday service on May 12, 2019, unexpected things began to happen. First, Mosaic Church was blessed with a venue at the Philippine Community Center (PCC). Second, the attendance made a giant leap from 15 to 72. Since then, Mosaic Church has been holding Sunday pre-launch services at the PCC, where there has been a consistent attendance of about 80.
Mosaic Church has been active inside and outside of the walls of PCC. Aside from having adult, youth, and children small groups in different homes, there have already been several church services and outings held at the beach and state parks. The church has also provided a music camp where children and even adults can discover, learn, and cultivate musical talents that God has blessed them. From drums to guitar to vocals, the students not only develop their skills but transform and repurpose their lives for the praise and worship of our God. The Holy Spirit is truly working in Mosaic Church to change lives. There were already ten baptisms and many decisions to recommit their lives for God’s glory and the furtherance of His kingdom.
In preparation for the official church launching next year on September 2020, Mosaic Church is planning several events that will engage the community.
On October 25, there will be a Harvest Festival in Pearland that aims to reach out to children and families in the area. On November 9, Mosaic Church will participate in the annual Filipino Street Festival at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. The church will be serving halo-halo and several Filipino delicacies. This not only allows the church to raise money but to make connections. On November 25, the youth group, also known as SALT (Saved And Loved in Truth), and young adults will host a Friendsgiving dinner event that will be held at Tom Bass Park.
Another event that has Mosaic Church buzzing is the Christmas play at the end of the year. Participating members are already having weekly rehearsals and making logistical preparations necessary to allow this production to touch the people in and outside of the church.
Juan is married to Jean for 22 years now. They have three children: Kyle (21), Krystelle (16), and Kamille (14). All are growing in the Lord and are actively involved in the community and at the new church.
For his theological education, he went to Doane Baptist Bible Institute for his Bachelor of Religious Education (1993) and had a Master of Religious Education from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary (1999) and a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary (2004).
His first full-time ministry experience was pastoring a church of 12 people in Iloilo City, Philippines. It grew into more than 200 adults and several hundreds of children. He also became an Adjunct Professor and taught pastoral ministry classes in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand. He also served as part of the Pastoral staff in an American church (2002-2005), in a Korean Church (2005-2008) and in a Chinese church (2008-2010).
When he moved to Houston to pastor a church in 2010, he was immediately burdened by the number of unreached Filipinos in this fourth most populous city in the USA. There are more than 155,000 Filipinos in Houston, but there are only seven Filipino Baptist churches reaching out to them. This created a godly itch he could not ignore and prompted him to reach out to them. So after serving for nine years in a church and after much prayer and consultation, his family and a few individuals went out in faith to plant more church-planting churches to reach the increasing number of Filipinos in Houston.
